Gigantic arch at Ctesiphon, Iraq

Apr. 18 Historic Iraq: At Ctesiphon, 25 miles to the south of Baghdad stands this gigantic arch which is the widest single span vault of un-reinforced brickwork in the world. It has a width of over 25 metres and a height of 27 metres. Although the legend attributes its construction to Semiramis, the legendary queen of Babylonian, it was probably constructed in the 4th Century BLC. by the Sassanid kings as the reception hall of their winter capital. Ctesiphon was intect until 1909, when a serious flood demolished the greater part of the edifice
