Girl Guides preparing for Channel swim, Folkestone, Kent

Aug. 08, 1966 - Preparing for girl guide Channel swim: Eleven girl guides and one Sea Ranger, all between the ages of 13 and 16, will be training hard at Folkestone this week, in the hope of being picked for next week's six-girl team to swim the English Channel. Never before has this relay swim been undertaken by a team of six girls, but the prospects of a successful swim are good because the training schedule has been tough and the 12 girls have been selected from 100 who undertook the training. The lucky six will know about 12 hours before the swim takes place. (between August 7th and 14th). Swimming from France to England for exactly one hour each in rotation, the girls will be carrying with them a message of goodwill from the Guides of France. Loneliness will be last of the swimmers problems because they will be trying out a new type of headgear (electronic loop communication system), which enables one-way communication from the boat to the swimmer. Words of encouragement or the favourite pop music can be relayed via the transmitter to the swimmer
