Glenda Jackson as Sarah Bernhardt in film Sarah
Oct. 17, 1975 - Sarah goes up in a balloon; Glenda Jackson, portraying the great actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) in the Lavish Reader's Digest film Sarah, now in production in England, took off in a balloon near London last weekend. In the film the scene takes place in Paris in the 1870s when Sarah, then a rebellious young actress with the Comedie Francaise, decided to go ballooning in the Bois de Boulogne but was carried off course by strong winds, missed three performances and was fired. Historically, Bernard took off from the Bois in 1878, seven years after the Siege of Paris (1870-71) during the Franco Prussian war when ballooning was not a hobby but a vital element in the city's survival.
