Golda Meir, Prime Minister of Israel, at vigil, Jerusalem
Dec. 12, 1970 - Protest Demonstration in Israel.: Day by day, as the Leningrad hijacking trials continue, the expression of solidarity by the Israeli people to their brethren in the Soviet Union, not only to those on trial, but to all who are denied emigration passes by a Russian authority grows ever stronger. The demonstrations began at the western wall in Jerusalem with a vigil and hunger strike, staged by ex-Russian Jewish Prisoners and other Russian Jewish immigrants, old and new to Israel, both young and old. However, expression of sympathy grows more emphatic daily among all sections of the population, regardless of origins, whether religious or secular. Earlier this week, many university students staged protest demonstrations in harmony with the demonstrations continuing at the western Wall, where Prime Minister Golda Meir and other members of the Government have personally joined the chorus chanting: We are with you, you are not forgotten, not only in Hebrew, but in all the languages of Israeli Jews who have come from all corners of the globe to meet again in Jerusalem. Photo Shows Prime Minister Golda Meir addressing the vigil at the Western Wall expressing the hope that present tears of sorrow will some day be washed away with tears of joy when Russian Jews who wish to come to live in Israel will freely be permitted to emigrate by Russian authorities
