Golden Hinde at Tower Pier, London

Aug. 08, 1974 - P.L.A. Director General Wishes Golden Hinde God Speed For Her Voyage Across The Atlantic: Three days before flying to North America to meet top Canadian and U.S. shipping and trade executives and Government officials, Port of London Authority Director-General John Lunch and Mrs. Joy Lunch stepped four hundred years into the past today when they visited the Golden Hinde at her Tower Pier berth to wish her captain and crew God Speed on their five month voyage to San Francisco. Mr. Lunch presented the Golden Hinde's skipper, Captain Adrian Small, with a replica of a Tudor sounding lead and line faithfully reconstructed by P.L.A. Hydrographic Department staff using materials known to Drake and basing their design of contemporary drawings and written descriptions. The lead and line, said Mr. Lunch, contrasted starkly with the ultra-modern electronic aids operated by the P.L.A. which will ensure that the ship has a hazard-free voyage when she sails on the first leg of her journey to San Francisco, leaving Tower Pier on September 2. Mr. Lunch also recalled the long association that the first Golden Hinde had with the Port of London. After arriving home from his round- the-world voyage in 1580 Drake arrived at Deptford to a hero's welcome and was knighted on board the ship by Queen Elizabeth I. The Golden Hinde spent the next 100 years on her berth at Deptford as a constant reminder to the adventurous spirit of that age. The ship has been lying at Tower Pier, close to the PLA's World Trade Centre headquarters, throughout the summer. Photo shows The Golden Hinde's skipper, Captain Adrian Small, dressed in Tudor costume, receiving the replica of a Tudor lead and line from Mr. John Lunch, watched by Mrs. Joy Lunch, on board the Golden Hinde at Tower Pier today
