Gotz Friedrich to be Director, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany
Feb. 28 Gotz Friedrich Will Become Successor of Siegfried Palme as Director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1981: Now aged 48 the future director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin was born in Naumburg on the Saale. He was studying at the theatre institute in Weimar and came to the Komische Oper in Berlin/East in 1953. Working there until 1972 he first was a stage management assistant, later became the leading stage manager. Before the death of his teacher Felsenstein he already left the house and changed to the Hamburgische Staatsoper as chief regisseur though he was proposed for director of the Komische Oper. In the presence of Gotz Friedrich his new engagement as successor of Siegfrid Palme was recently made public by the senator of culture of Berlin. The contract has a run of five years, but no details were published by the Senator. Friedrich will bring out three productions at a time of two seasons. He didn't utter further details of his artistic intentions. During the last year his contributions to the Festival of Bayreuth/West Germany as well as his stagings at national and foreign stages caused a lot of sensations
