Greek engineer tests the theories of Archimedes
May 05, 1981 - Eureka It's A Powered Cannon: Proving that the ancient Greeks had steam power long before what and the western world, a retired Greek research engineer has built a steam powered cannon one fifth the size of the cannon designed by Archimedes in 215 BC to repel the invading Romans from Syracuse. 67 year old Yiannis Sakase's working model shows that the cannon wasn't the failure which historians have long believed. In a recent demonstration the steam produced by heating the metal barrel to 400 degrees centigrade shot the cannon ball out with enough power and soouneye to hit a target some 80 metres away, suggesting the original cannon had a range of some 400 meters. Mr Sakase has devoted the last 8 years to proving the least accepted theories of Archimedes to be correct. He is now planning to construct a hydraulic clock of great accuracy.
