Guildhall, High Street, Windsor

Feb. 29 Windsor Guildhall which stands in the centre of the High Street as seen through a picturesque bow window. The building was designed by Sir Thomas Fitz, Surveyor to the Cinque Ports, and was begun in 1686. On his death Sir Christopher Wren, an illustrious son of Windsor, succeeded him as architect. Although built as a stronghold by William the Conqueror in 1070, Windsor Castle has for many years been the traditional home of the Sovereign and each succeeding sovereign has added something to the glories of the ancient Castle. Queen Victoria whose statue stands at the bottom of Castle Hill spent most of the years of her widowhood there. Many of the shops in Windsor have the By Appointment sign hanging over their doors and the sovereign very often shops personally in the town
