Gunther Rennert, German opera director

Feb. 29 German Opera Director Gunther Rennert died. One of the most famous opera directors of Germany Gunther Rennert died on July 31st, 1978 in a Salzburg hospital. He stayed in the Austrian town because of the festival there, where he directed the Rosenkavalier of Richard Strauss, but he did not live to see this opera premiere. Gunther Rennert, born in Essen, West Germany, was at first a lawyer, studied art and musical history and then worked as assistant director in Frankfurt and later as chief-director in Koenigsberg and Berlin. From 1946 till 1957 he was director at the Hamburg opera and from 1967 till 1976 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich
