Gustav Pietsch and his wife Gertrude
Feb. 02, 1961 - 400 men saved from the Nazi executioners by the now 67 years old Captain Gustav Pietsch with the help of his wife Gertrude. In the years from 1935 to 1938 he smuggled 400 young Jews after having trained them as mariners in Danzig on board of Swedish, Danish and other ships to make it possible for them to escape. About 50 times Pietsch was arrested by the Gestapo but they could never prove anything. In 1938 he had to escape himself with his family and after a long wanderir of Nazi-persecuted now published the help which was given by this married couple. On February 5th 1961 the couple will return to Israel which became their native country
