H-bomb protest led by Bertrand Russell, Whitehall, London
Feb. 26 Bertrand Russell in sit down H-bomb protest. The 88-year old philosopher, Earl Russell, this afternoon led a sit-down demonstration against nuclear weapons, outside the Ministry of Defence, in Whitehall, London. The demonstration was organised by the Committee of 100 to press home their demand for the immediate scrapping of the Polaris agreement with the US. The US Depot Ship carrying Polaris missiles is expected in the Clyde today. The Committee of 100 was formed in October 1960, in response to an appeal by Earl Russell and Rev. Michael Scott, and its purpose is to organise non-violent resistance to nuclear war and to the manufacture and use of all weapons of mass destruction by any power.
