Bill Haley Father of Rock and Roll Tours Germany
October 29, 1958 - Hamburg, Germany - Chaos ensues as German youth turn a rock and roll concert by American pioneering rock group Bill Haley and the Comets, into a riot. They played their big hit: Rock Around The Clock to the large fanatic crowd TMs delight. The rebellious young and restless went into frenzy, like the earlier shows in Berlin and Hamburg, the band was run off the stage, equipment was destroyed and policemen and spectators were injured. The young concert-goers picked a fight with guards from the Hamburg student association and then with about a hundred policemen who were trying to clear the hall, a riot ensued and altogether the damage amounted to 20, 000 DM. As mass events, rock n roll concerts in the 50 TMs became crystallization points for young people's rebellion against the bourgeois-patriarchal society of the Adenauer era in Germany. Outbreaks of violence by rebellious youth, were not exactly uncommon, riots and scuffles with the police became almost routine at large rock n roll concerts
