Feb. 29 Take Hope wins the Japanese Derby.: Take Hope. with Jockey Isao Shimada in the saddle, won the 40th running of the Japan Derby by one and 3/4 lengths at the Fuchu racetrack, Tokyo Sunday, upsetting the favourite Hai Seiko to win the 25, 000 prize money, from a field of 27 top 3 year old runners over the 2, 400 meter distance, in 2 minutes 27.8 seconds bettering the old records mark of 2, 28, 6 by Long Ace in 1972. Photo shows Jockey Isao Shimada waves his helmet to the cheering crowd, as the winning horse Take Hope is led in by its owner Mr Take Kondo, after the running of the 40th Japan Derby at Fuchu racecourse Tokyo
