Feb. 29 Bunn Disqualifies Harvey Smith Five After British Jumping Derby: Five hours after he had won the British Jumping Derby for the second year running on Mr. B.J. Eastwood's Mattie Brown at Hickstead yesterday, Harvey Smith was sent a telegram saying that he had been disqualified, and the the 000 first prize, a world record, had been forfeit. Smith An Mattie Brown had th better of a two-horse jump-off in this classic with Stephen Hadley on Propero who, if the disqualification is upheld, will presumably be declared the winner. The telegram, sent by Douglas bunn, owner of hickstand and vice-president of the birtish show jumping association, said that because of your disgusting gesture the directors and i have disqualified you. all prize money is also forfeit. The gesture referred to was a two-finger one made by smith towards bunns balcony at the hickstead club house after he had won the competition. On hearing of the telegram, Colonel Von Baath, German representative on the jury, said that Bunn Could not disqualify Smith. He said Persona;l Feelings do not come into it. If he won, he won, and you cannot alter International rules'. The matter will now presumably be subject to the B.S.J.A.
