Oct. 22, 1965 - 22-10-65 The Grandfather Jockey falls at Newbury At Newbury yesterday, nearly everyone was hoping that Tim Durant would succeed. He is 66, a grandfather, and although he has ridden in point-to-points, this was his first race on a racetrack under the rules: The Rosy Brook Amateur Riders Chase over three miles. But the predictable happened, of course. Seven fences had been successfully negotiated. All eight horses were still standing and Mr. Durant has 25-1 Aerial III tucked in behind the two pacemakers. Then disaster, Aerial made a hash of the water jump, and pitched Mr. Durant head first into the grass. Mr. Durant is an American, used to be a broker in Wall Street. Mr. Durant now plans to ride Aerial at Liverpool next week. If we do well, he said, we will go for the Grand National. Photo Shows: during the race at Newbury yesterday
