He is 66, a grandfather, and although he has ridden in point-to-points, this was his first race on a racetrack under the rules: The Rosy Brook Amateur Riders Chase over three miles. But the predictable happened, of course. Seven fences had been successfully negotiated. All eight horses were still standing and Mr. Durant has 25-1 Aerial III tucked in behind the two pacemakers. Then disaster, Aerial made a hash of the water jump, and pitched Mr. Durant head first into the grass. Mr. Durant is an American, used to be a broker in Wall Street.
