1981 - LESTER PIGGOTT IN HORROR STALLS CRASH AT EPSOM: Yesterday Lester Piggott narrowly escaped death during a race accident at Epson. Im lucky to alive, he said, after a frightened horse dragged him through a narrow gap at the bottom of the starting stall. Lester, nine times champion jockey had part of his right ear torn off and suffered extensive bruising as he fell to the ground. His mount, Winsor Boy, bolted down the before course before jumping a rail into agroup of spectators. The horse broke his neck and died while a women was knocked unconscious.Piggott, 45, and the women, a Mrs Valerie Cane, were taken to Epsom District Hospital. Both were later released, Piggott was transferred to Hospital, Rochampton, for plastic surgery.
