1968 - From Small Town Electrician To International Puppeteer: Harry Corbett, with his well-known, friendly, Yorkshire smile. He can smile - with the contracts and success Sooty has brought him. At Home With Sooty: The TV Teddy Bear Puppet Becomes A Dollar Earner Through A Walt Disney Film Series For U.S. Television: Up in Guiseley, Yorkshire, Harry Corbett and his famous glove puppet Sooty hardly know which way to turn for engagements. Latest success is a contract with Walt Disney, and the production of a series of films for American Television. The little factory which turns out all Sootys props and everything Sooty-size, is busier than ever. Wilkinson, the secretary, is flooded with correspondence and -ill Garret, the carpenter-handyman has never had more order. And it was barely three years ago that Harry Corbett, then an electrician, bought a glove puppet on the beach at Blackpool. He paid 7/6d for the first Sooty to amuse his children. He first released he had bought something a future a forthnight after at a childrrens party. The children liked his improvement turn so much, that someone watching arranged for him to appear in a show in TV in Monchestra. that one appearance started has is own solicitor, accountant, agent secretary script writer prop. department, ideas man and wardrobe mistress (Mrs Corbett); and harry is building a new wing to his house as well having thrown in his old job. BBC, Comnmercial TV, films, stage and private engagements, asa well as the commercial exploitation of Sooty-toys keep him busy man, and the money rooling in. Harry's two sons now go to boarding school, and the Corbetts are in the money, to the tune of a -10, 000 income from the a five figure contract from NBC of America for the Walt Disney films and -12, 000 from Commercial TV. Then there is the unpublished sums from commercial exploitation. Even harry can hardly believe it all. only chap who is quite unnaffected is-Sooty.
