Harry Corbett with his famous glove puppet Sooty
Jan. 01, 1968 - BBC Can't Part Sooty And Me: Harry Corbett said last night the BBC had told him his puppets Sooty and Sweep must get a new act preferably one that excluded Mr. Corbett. For 15 years Sooty and his friends have been a favourite television programme with children and adults. Last night, in his dressing room at London's Mayfair Theatre where he is appearing in Sooty's Xmas, Mr. Corbett said: They are taking my act away and it is a wicked thing to do. A few weeks ago BBC officials told me they wanted to keep Sooty but they wanted to play a different role. They even suggested Sooty could appear with an actor and an actress but not with me. This is not only ridiculous. It is physically impossible. A BBC spokesman said: The Pinky and Perky series has started this week, and our future plans with regard to Sooty are not yet settled. Discussions are still going on with Mr. Corbett. Photo show Harry Corbett pictured last night with Sooty
