Head of Zeus discovered in basement of house in Istanbul

May 22, 1968 - Head of Zeus Found.: The head of Zeus, Father of the Gods, found in a wooden box, where it was safely packed to be freighted abroad. Turkish police raided a basement under a two storey house in the suburbs of Istanbul and revealed the historical treasure. Experts from the Archaeological Museum disclosed the priceless value of the sculpture, after it had been unpacked and the pieces put together. Besides the head of Zeus, a small-size sculpture of Venus, Goddess of Love, was also found in the boxes, ready to be shipped abroad. The owners of these historical treasures were taken into custody, although they stated they were ignorant of the fact that these sculptures were of great value. The head of Zeus and the sculpture of Venus were taken to the Archaeological Museum for further analysis, while police continue further investigations, Experts have stated that the head of Zeus is unique as they only had different sized sculptures of Zeus showing head, shoulders and chest
