Hector Luis Fautario and President Juan Peron, Buenos Aires
Dec. 12, 1973 - Argentine air force make first flight from Argentina via Antarctic to Australia and New Zealand: A Hercules aircraft of the Argentinian air force made a first flight from Buenos Aires to Australia and New Zealand via the south pole to establish a new route. The mission was headed by Argentine air force minister Hector Luis Fautario. The flight was a military one, but in time commercial flights may be established as the flight reduced the distance by 50% via the south pole route. The crew were welcomed by President Peron when they arrived back at the airport in Buenos Aires after the 48 hour flight.
