Heirs - Heiress - Royalty - Socialites

Jun. 06, 1970 - Lord Wigg Welcomes Gypsies To Epsom: The gypsies are arriving for Wednesday's Derby in their legalized and limoosined droves. With their presence at Epsom racecourse sanctioned this year, the whole appearance has become vastly respectable, Gleaming modern caravans yesterday stood on the newly alloted Site. Gypsy leaders are expecting something like 400 families instead of the usual 250, not that they have a home to come to. Rent for a week is8 a caravan, with water, toilet rubbish disposal facilities. Lord Wigg, Chairman of the horserace Betting levy Board, and one of the Epsom Downs Conservators, was on a tour of inspection and everything went smoothly. He laughed sportingly when a group of gypsies took2 off him at a game of pitch and toss. Lord Wigg said. This is experimental. There has been tremendously bad feeling in the past, and we hope the old frictions have gone. If this scheme works, we will then consider going on with it next year. Photo shows. Vanko-Stefan Rouda (left) President of the International Gypsy Committee, visiting Epsom from France, and Mr. George Marriott, from Bedfordshire, co-treasurer of the british Gypsy Council
