1975 - ?80, 000 Art clear-out in wealth tax protest: The Earl of March, son and heir of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, has stripped an entire showroom of ?80, 000 art treasures at the family's 18th century stately home, Goodwood house, near Chichester. Sussex, to show the public the possible effect of the Capital Transfer Tax and Wealth Tax as historic showplaces. Lord March said that under present Capital transfer Tax rules the entire family art collection, worth several million pounds, would be liable for a charge of ?63 in every ?100 in 1989. To meet this bill Lord March says it will mean aeither selling all the Canalettos and Stubbs which have hund in the house since the 18th century or disposing of the rest of the work of art. The The room which has been emptied - the Green hall - will now simply contain a table with petition forms for the public to sign calling on Parliament to safeguard this part of the heritage.
