In her autobiography Nicole Nobody published today, the Duchess of Bedford tells of the smiling stranger who forced his way into her hotel bedroom in Manchester and gave her an awakening that every woman should experience. It happened in 1946, when the French-born Duchese, then married unhappily to a man 14years her senior, was exporting textiles for the family firm. She answered a knock on her door, wearing a bathrobe. The stranger- very tall and smiling'- forced his way in. locked the door and took the telephone from her. I tried to acream but I was so horrified by now that the cry died in my throar, writes the Duchese. Not once did the smile leave his face - even when he pushed me gently on to the bed. And that is the last thing I can remember about that particular evening. We stayed together for three days. He was a superb lover. I was an awakening that every woman should experience, .
