Helmut Kohl and Franz Josef Strauss, CSU Congress in Munich

Dec. 26 CSU Party Congress In Munich, West Germany: The Party Congress of the Christian Socialist Union took place in Munich, West Germany on September 28th and 29th 1979. The meeting took a special national and international interest because of the fact that the chairman of this party, Franz Josef Strauss, after a dramatic confrontation within the CDU/CSU-sister parties, was nominated as common candidate for chancellorship for the coming election in autumn 1980. At the Munich Party Congress Franz Josef Strauss was re-elected as chairman of the CSU with an overwhelming majority (857 of 866 legal votes).
