Dec. 26 CSU Party Congress In Munich, West Germany: The Party Congress of the Christian Socialist Union took place in Munich, West Germany on September 28th and 29th 1979. The meeting was of special national and international interest because the chairman of this party, Franz Josef Strauss, after a dramatic confrontation within the CDU/CSU sister parties, became nominated as common candidate for chancellorship for the coming election in autumn 1980. At the Munich Party Congress Franz Josef Strauss was re-elected as chairman of the CSU with an overwhelming majority (by 857 of 866 legal votes).
