Mar. 22 Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Has Resigned: The chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Willy Brandt, has declared his immediate resignation on May 6, 1974. His step is linked to the espionage affair Guillaume, who had been apprehended as a CDR spy on April 24. The Federal Chancellor has taken full responsibility for the negligence in this case. Brandt and the ministers of his cabinet received their discharge documents by the Federal President Custav Hainemann on May 7. The ministers, however, will be on duty until May 16, because at this day the Minister of finance Helmut Schmidt (SPD) will be elected new chancellor. Willy Brandt, in spite of his resignation, will stay as chairman in the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
