May 05, 1974 - Chancellor Willy Brandt resigns : Herr Willy Brandt last night resigned as west German chancellor, following the arrest 12 days ago of one of his personal aides, Gunther Guillaume was arrested as an east German spy. In a letter to president Heinemgnn, Herr Brandt wrote, I accept the political responsibility for negligence in connection with the Guillaume espionage affair and declare my resignation from the office of Federal chancellor, Herr Brandt has been chancellor since 1969. His most likely permanent successor is Mr. Helmut Schmidt, the finance minister. photo shows Mr. Helmut Schmidt, who is the most likely to become Herr Brandt's permanent successor
