Henry Lewis, American conductor, in London

Dec. 12, 1968 - Black Conductor For Royal Philharmonic Orchestra: The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will have a black conductor for the first time tomorrow (Dec 17), when American Henry Lewis conducts them at the Royal Festival Hall. He takes over a concert that was to have been in the hands of Kiril Kondrashin, who recently suffered a heart attack. Los Angeles born Henry Lewis is a frequent guest conductor with major American orchestras and earlier this year he was appointed Music Director of The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra - becoming the first black man to be permanent conductor of an American orchestra.
