Henry Moore, English sculptor, at Jerusalem exhibition
Apr. 18 Henry Moore Visits His Exhibition In Jerusalem Henry Moore, the world-famous British sculptor paid an unexpected visit to Jerusalem to visit the British Council sponsored Henry Moore Exhibition'. Needless to say the exhibition which consisted of fifty of his works ranging from minute maquettes to gigantic bronzes attracted a host of visitors to the Israel Museum. The 62-year-old sculptor was greatly impressed by the combination of the man-made settings and the natural grandeur of the Judean Hills as background to his monumental pieces. Later Henry Moore toured the museum building and showed himself greatly absorbed by the recently discovered pre-historic figures, found in the nearby desert of Beersheba, whose shapes show such affinity with modern sculpture. Finally the great English sculptor paid a visit to the Scher-Kennedy Youth Wing of the Museum where students were making clay models. At once his curiosity was aroused Is that the local clay? he asked, May I just handle it? And in no time he forgot all about his surroundings and was deeply engrossed in becoming acquainted with the texture and the potential of the local clay. Happily perched on a stool amidst a crowd of Israeli teenagers he was asked by one young girl whether he had planned in advance what the lump of clay was going to be. I don't know, he replied, The clay will suggest something. Happily the great man joins in the modelling class experimenting with the local clay. When asked whether he had a preconceived idea for what he intended the lump of clay to be the sculptor replied, The clay itself will suggest something.
