Hercules aircraft, Buenos Aires, new route via South Pole
Dec. 12, 1973 - ARGENTINE AIR FORCE MAKES FIRST FLIGHT FROM ARGENTINA VIA ANTARCTIC TO AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND. A Hercules Aircraft of the Argentina Air Force made a first flight from Buenos Aires to Australia and New Zealand via the South Pole, to establish a new route. The mission was headed by Argentine air force minister Hector Luis Fautario. The flight was a military one, but in time commercial flights may be established as the flight reduced the distance by 50% via this new route. The crew were welcomed by President Juan Peron when they arrived back at the airport of Buenos Aires, after the 48 hour flight.
