Joseph looks for freedom was his first novel, published in 1927 which brought him the Kleist-prize. Besides his novels he wrote a lot of biographies, plays, stories and essays. From 1972 till 1976 Hermann Kesten was president of the PEN-Center of West-Germany. Among his many awards is the Georg-Buechner-Prize which he won in 1974
