Oct. 10, 1960 - Queen Launches Britain's First Nuclear Submarine. H.M. The Queen today launched the DREADNOUGHT - Britain's first Nuclear Submarine - at Barrow-in-Furnesa. The craft has a displacement of 3, 500 tone - is 266ft. long with a beam of 31 ft. Her reactor is of the pressurised water type - which will drive a single shaft through steam turbines.
