Jan. 01, 1969 - EXIT THE ROYAL NAVY - FLYING THE JOLLY ROGER, HMS TRUMP - the last British link with the Royal Australian Navy - sailed out of of Sydney recently, The Jolly Roger was the proud emblem of her victories in World War II, She was the last British sub to sink an enemy vessel. For the 65-man crew it was a last goodbye to Sydney. The Trump was going home to the wreckers, and with her departure Australia will go it alone - with her own submarine service. The first moves to give Australia an independent navy date back to 1913, Trump's departure marks the evolution of the Australian submarine service, the Flag Officer commanding the Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral G.J.B, Crabb said, We are now completely independent of the Royal Navy. Trump's departure closed an era which entered its final stage in 1949 when the British Government agreed to lend a submarine squadron to Australia, That agreement expires in April, As Trump moved away from the RAN submarine base at neutral bay, a navy band played Rule Britannia. Trump has had eight years service in Australian waters. Built in 1944, Trump had a short but distinguished war career. operating from western Australia, she sank 10, 000 tons of enemy shipping and carried out several shore bombardments in four patrols during the last few months of the war. In 1948 Trump underwent a refit and operated from British ports around the world until 1961 when she joined the fourth submarine division at neutral bay.
