HMS Vanguard in rough seas during NATO exercise
Oct. 10, 1953 - Allied ships run into heavy going: Gales, winds and stormy seas made it rough going in Exercise Mariner, a test of the defences of nine NATO nations against a simulated Communist attack. The US, Britain, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Belgium and Portugal contributed some 300 ships, 1, 000 aircraft and a half a million men to the exercise which ranged from the Arctic to the Mediterranean and was described as the largest combined manoeuvres ever.
