Hugo Eckener, German airship pioneer

Aug. 14, 1979 - 25th anniversary of the death of Hugo Eckener: on 14 August 1954, died in Friedrichshafen, West-Germany, the well known German airship-pioneer Hugo Eckener, a co-operator of Graf Zeppelin. He was a writer, before he realised his aeronautical dreams - he entered in the year 1908 the airship-building of Zeppelin, who started their production with the help of a donation. In 1935 Eckener became chairman of the German Zeppelin Airship Company. He initiated the building of airship Graf Zeppelin (LZ 127), With it he took a trip to America, 1929 a world travel and 1931 a polar-flight. 1936/37 Eckener made regular travels to North-America with the airship Hindenburg, which exploded in 1937 in Lakehurst, New York, USA. Eckener died at the age of 86 years
