Immigrants awaiting admission into U.S. in New York City

June 20, 1924 - New York, NY, U.S. - Immigrants eagerly waiting admission into the United States. A unique race is on between a dozen liners and authorities are preparing for the busy day when they arrive. The steamers, carrying hundreds of immigrants are racing from Ambrose Light to Quarantine New York, and the first vessels arriving will be examined first. The reason for this hurry is that on July first the new years quota of 3% of the Nationals now resident in America opens, but only 20% of this number are permitted to land
