Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India

Feb. 5, 1970 - New Delhi, India - India's first and only female prime minister INDIRA GANDHI made strides in modernising India but never quelled its political turmoil. She won the election of 1972 in a landslide, but courts later upheld charges of election fraud in 1975. In 1977, she was toppled from power, later regaining her post as prime minister in 1980
