Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India

Oct. 29, 1971 - London, England, U.K. - India's first and to date only female prime minister INDIRA GANDHI made strides in modernising India but never quelled its political turmoil. She won the election of 1972 in a landslide, but courts later upheld charges of election fraud in 1975. Gandhi responded by jailing her opponents and suspending civil liberties.
