Nov 27, 1972 - New Delhi, India - India's first and to date only female prime minister INDIRA GANDHI made strides in modernising India but never quelled its political turmoil. In 1971, Gandhi provided military support for the secession of East Bengal from Pakistan, creating Bangladesh. She won the election of 1972 in a landslide, but courts later upheld charges of election fraud in 1975. Gandhi responded by jailing her opponents and suspending civil liberties. In 1977, she was toppled from power, later regaining her post as prime minister in 1980. After quashing a Sikh uprising in 1984 she was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards.
