Feb. 25 President Sukarno announces October 14, 1965 appointment of Maj. Gen. Suharto (left) as Army Chief. Suharto replaces Lt. gen Achamd Yani, who was killed by Communists in aborted coup of Oct. 1, 1965. In center is Dr. Subandrio, 1st Deputy Premier. Ceremony is at Istana Palace, Djakarta. Sukarno made a deal with the military (who routed the Somminists) to appoint Suharto providing that Subandrio stayed in the Cabinet (the military wanted Subandrio out). Behind Sukarno: his chief bodyguard, Brig Gen. Sabur-who was later ousted by Suharto on 3/29/66, and ultimately arrested. (Subandrio was later arrested and condemned to death)
