Apr. 05 Malay tailor turns soldier to defend his home from Reds - In her 5-year-old battle against the Communists in Malaya, Britain not only has supplied her. own troops, but has been teaching the Malayans to protect their homes by organizing a Home Guard of over 300, 000 volunteers. A typic8l member of this Home Guard is Ismail bin Bakar, a tailor in civilian life who enrolled early in 1949. Ismail, who has a wife end two children to protect, recently took a special two v/eeks* course which resulted in hie enlistment as a paid instructor to help train other Home Guard volunteers. Now Ismail the taller is a Sergeant, playing a full-time part In ridding his country of the Communist terror.
