Jan. 01, 1962 - PRESIDENT SUKARNO ESCAPES IN ASSASSINATION BID.. GRENADE EXPLODES BEHIND HIS CAR AT MAKASSA, SOUTH CELIBES. PRESIDENT SUKARNO of Indonesia-escoped unhurt last night when a hand grenade explodes a child and two adult were killed and thirty one people including fourteen children-were injured.It was said later that several people had been arrested as Dutch Agents Dr. Sukermo was on his way to a sports arena to give another speech in his campaign to gain Dutch New Guines for Indonesia.He continued with his speech to about 3, 000 students and goverment workers - although some onlookers thought he looked nervous he did not mention the attempt on his life.
