Aug. 08, 1965 - SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA SPLIT. The island city of Singapore today seceded from the two-year old Malaysian Federation and became an independent sovereign state. No official reason for the shock move was given immediately by the Singapore Government, but Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysian Prime Minister, said it arose from the many difference between the two governments. The secession agreement gives Britain continued use of her bases in Singapore. Today's official announcement said the secession agreement-had been signed on Saturday by the Tunku and Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister of Singapore. and other Ministers from Malaysia and Singapore.
