Inhabitants of Athens suburb defend illegally built homes

Mar. 18, 1965 - Sixty-three Injured In Illegal Building Demonstrations In Greece: Sixty three people were injured at Anthoupolis - suburb of Athens - during major clashes between 300 police and 2, 000 villagers in which the police resorted to smoke and tear gas to restore order. The incidents started when strong gendarme forces escorted teams of engineers who were ordered to demolish various houses built without the owners receiving proper authority from the local government departments. Almost the entire population of the suburb took part in defending the buildings using clubs and stones. Photo shows the scene as police use smoke and teargas - while the local inhabitants reply by throwing stones and bricks
