James Bowman, countertenor, in role of Venus, London

Mar. 12, 1971 - Introducing - the world's first Unisex Venus. James Bowman as The Goddess of Love'.: James Bowman, the world-famous countertenor, is cast as Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love, in the Opera da Camera production of William Boyce's 18th-century opera The Secular Masque which will be performed today and tomorrow at St. John's Smith Square, London. This is believed to be the first time ever that a male singer has sung the role in a stage performance of the opera - which, in any case has not been seen in London for over 200 years. Bowman's vital statistics - 39, 34 1/2, 40 - are not quite (as one would only expect!) those of the voluptuous Venus de Milo (43 1/2, 37 47 7/8), but when it comes to height, Mr. Bowman really comes into his own, he is 6 1 1/2 compared to Venus 5'5.
