James Callaghan presents BEM to R G Towersey

Mar. 03, 1967 - Chancellor Presents British Empire Medal to man from the Stationery Office: At the Treasury today, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, James Callaghan, presented the B.E.M to Mr. Ronald Gibbs Towersey, who joined the Stationery Office as a boy messenger in the typewriter repair shop in 1929 at the age of 14. He didn't remain long in this position and soon entered on a five year period of training which ended in 1936 when he became a fully qualified typewriter mechanic in what had by that time become the Office Machinery Repair Service. Shortly after a three year tour of duty at the Stationery Office's Manchester Regional Office, Mr. Towersey was promoted to Assistant Foreman and ten years later in 1959 he was made Foreman. Mr. Towersey has seen a great growth in the size and responsibilities of the section during his career. From a repair shop dealing with typewriters and simple duplicators, it now covers office offset litho machines, addressing machines, in rapidly increasing numbers and complexity. Mr. Towersey has kept abreast of the rapid developments in engineering and electronic techniques with great success and his unfailing courtesy and devotion to duty have played a large part in making the service one which is greatly valued by customer departments. It is to a large extent due to his influence that the office machinery repair organisation is both highly economical and works with little friction, industrial disputes being almost unknown. Mr. Towersey is married and his daughter (age 21) is a shorthand typist in the Civil Service. Mr. Towersey is a handyman about the house and spends some of his time on the construction of a scale model railway in which a great deal of attention has been paid to minute detail. He enjoys listening to classical music. Photo shows Mr.James Callaghan, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (left), presenting the B.E.M to Mr. Towersey, at the Treasury today
