James Woodford with sculptures for Kew Gardens

Aug. 13, 1956 - Replicas of the Queen's Beasts for Kew Gardens: Replicas of the Queen's Beasts are expected to be erected at the end of this month on the terrace of the Palm House at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. They are nearing completion at a studio in Sutton. This has been made possible through the generosity of a private donor who wishes to remain anonymous. The Queen's Beasts, which decorated the facade of the Coronation annexe of Westminster Abbey, are taken from heraldic devices used by Her Majesty's ancestors. The ten 6ft statues will be in Portland Stone. Photo shows James Woodford, the sculptor, watched by some children from Sutton, works on the last of the ten Queen's Beasts - The Welsh Dragon - at his studio today
