Oct. 10, 1959 - Survivor Of Strange Disaster Gives Evidence At Inquiry. He Was Blown Up - At Sea: To be seen in London yesterday was 25 year old Gordon Allely of Birmingham - when he gave evidence at the inquiry into the disaster which a year ago - struck vessel - with ten other officers immediately below - when a terrific explosion lifted him - the 400 ton bridge and 1, 400 tons of steel deek - high into the air and deposited him - still on the bridge in the sea - 100 feet away. almost immediately - and he swim for three miles towards the blazing vessel through shark infested waters - before he was picked up by other survivors in a lifeboat.
