Feb. 25 Japanese New Year Fortune Trees; It is a new year tradition in Japan to visit a temple to purchase a paper showing what the future will hold. If if contains good fortune, the paper is taken home and carefully preserved. But if the news is not so good, the paper is pinned to the temple wall, or to a nearby tree or bush. This picture shows hundreds of fortune papers pinned to bushes at the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo. The Shrine is one of Japan's foremost places of worship and was visited by more than one million people during the week long new year celebrations. In addition to pinning up their fortune papers in this way, many people also prayed to the gods and made small donations
