Feb. 25 Daily tax on city motorists to stop traffic jams: The plan to levy a tax of 500 yen (about.50) per day on passenger cars entering Tokyo and Osaka from outside districts, or driving in the downtown section of the two major cities in Japan, announced by the transportation ministry, is meeting stiff opposition from motor car manufacturers, and motorists. The transportation minister Mr Yasuhiro Nakasone is determined to go ahead with the plan, and said the city toll system would be the last remedy to cure the paralysed traffic conditions in Tokyo and Osaka. The billions of an yen raised by the tax would be used to construct underground roads.
